Those two Supreme Court Justices have an LL.B. degree. For the story: the LL.B. – or ‘Legum Baccalaureus’ was once the first professional law degree in the United States. It was first awarded in 1820 by Harvard University and rapidly grew in acceptance as the standard first professional degree in law.
The J.D. degree was first suggested in 1902 by the Harvard law faculty but it is the University of Chicago Law School, which conferred the J.D. on its graduates for the first time. It then became the first professional degree in 1965 upon a resolution of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar.
On April 7, 1969, Harvard voted that the J.D. would thereafter be awarded as the first degree in law and that it would be made available retroactively upon application to recipients of the LL.B. degree.
